Big News: We’re Championing Digital for the Good of ALL!
They say that life is the greatest teacher, and I, too, have experienced a fair share of its lessons—both rewarding and demanding. Life has also taught me that each lesson transforms us into teachers ourselves, with hopes that our experiences set the pace for future generations. The onus is on us to embrace this responsibility, as neglecting it isn’t an option for forerunners like myself.
As a UX Writer and Content Designer from Africa with global work experience and impact, my career journey places me at the forefront of a rapidly evolving field, wearing many hats:
- As a UX Professional with top-rated freelance and in-house work experience at international organizations such as Toptal, BetPawa, and co, my work involves strategizing and designing conversational and converting user experiences for digital products like apps, websites, and displays.
- As the Founder and Lead UX Tutor at UX Content Champ: The pioneering UX Writing and Content Design Academy by an African with a global impact, my team focuses on championing equitable digital education through:
- Designing Low-Barrier-to-Entry Learning Programs, Including boot camps, workshops, webinars, and more.
- Leading Non-Profit Tech Initiatives: Offering scholarships, facilitating book giveaways from international digital content organizations like Content Design London, and providing direct mentorships on reputable platforms such as ADPList.
- Mentorship and Advocacy: Sharing educational content and advice online, and advocating for meaningful courses through speaking engagements.
- Launching the ‘Digital for Good’ Initiative: Our latest initiative aimed at equipping the younger generation with essential digital skills for a thriving future.
Let’s talk about the younger generation.
The Need to Empower Them
By now, we’ve all heard the saying, “Children are the leaders of tomorrow.” However, effective leaders are often expected to be competent in current advancements to thrive.
Yet, studies show that 60% of African children lack access to quality digital education.
And based on my extensive yet unfruitful search for supporting resources when embarking on this project, it seems likely that an even larger percentage of children worldwide face similar barriers, lacking the basic resources needed to learn digital skills like Digital Design and UX Writing. This underscores that the issue isn’t confined to Africa, though the challenges may be more acute there.
This significant gap limits the chances of many children becoming future leaders or innovators in an increasingly digital world.
In a world where technology advances without brakes, understanding how to create, contribute, and navigate the digital landscape has become a crucial—if not life-saving—skill. This is why professionals are continually caught in the whirlwind of upskilling, as most tech career paths aren’t adequately covered in traditional school environments. Even when they are, these curriculums often struggle to keep pace with rapid digital innovation.
Which Begs the Question:
Who is advocating for digital literacy for the future leaders of tomorrow? Or providing them with the digital skills training they need to thrive in the digital world? Drawing from my international experience and insights, I must say, the answer is not many.
And I understand why. As Ethiopian tech professional Abel Fikreyohanes Tegafaw and I discussed in our ‘UX in Africa’ interview with renowned global web usability consultant and co-founder of Nielsen Norman Group, Jakob Nielsen, while UX is rapidly growing in Africa, there remains a significant gap in acquiring educational resources—even at the highest levels. I’ve experienced these challenges firsthand, and they can be attributed to several factors:
- Cultural diversity and linguistic barriers
- Digital literacy and internet accessibility
- Payment barriers
- Economic factors
These are just a few of the gaps that UX Content Champ, through its main academy and Digital for Good (D4G) Initiative, works to bridge for current and future generations.
Having overcome the challenges above and now leading Africa’s pioneering UX Writing and Content Design Academy while contributing to the industry’s global advancement over the past years, I’ve learned that a thriving future relies on the current generation equipping younger minds with the essential digital literacy and ethical strategies they need to leverage digital for the greater good.
This initiative aims to:
- Overcome barriers to accessing learning materials.
- Address educational biases against underrepresented genders.
- Update the outdated knowledge base of traditional school curriculums.
- Encourage early understanding and adoption of digital career pathways such as Content Design and UX Writing.
By engaging them early, we can help them become knowledgeable users and innovators skilled in leveraging digital for the good of themselves and others while mitigating or reducing the challenges they might otherwise face.
We are also not oblivious to the unique challenges we have encountered on this quest. However, our impact—reaching thousands and training hundreds—demonstrates that the success of this initiative is built on a solid foundation of your support and our commitment, as evident in several industry-leading publications and testimonials from talents and peers alike.
For instance, in my interview with Jakob Nielsen, I shared insights on the promising state of UX in Africa, highlighting how Africa’s young population eagerly adopts new technology. This demographic shift will form the basis of future growth opportunities, underscoring the importance of equipping younger talents with the digital skills they need to thrive.
Similarly, in my interview with Sarah Winters, former head of content for GOV.UK and CEO of Content Design London, we explored the state of Content Design and UX Writing in Nigeria and the broader impact of digital education. I shared my vision of expanding digital education for young people, a goal that is now coming to fruition with the launch of the Digital for Good (D4G) Initiative.
The D4G Initiative is Currently Delivered in Two Pathways:
1: Digital Workshop and Workbook (Children)
We collaborate with NGOs, educational institutes, and any organization with a community of interested children to introduce them to the concept of digital citizenship through interactive workshops and workbooks. Afterward, using the D4G workbook, we engage them further in the basic concepts of UX design, UX Writing, and Content Design—equipping them with practical digital skills.
2: Free UX Writing Courses (Adults)
We are offering completely FREE access to the UX Content Champ’s industry-leading Introduction to UX Writing Course. This initiative is a no-barrier-to-access opportunity designed to conquer the inertia many talents face when accessing tech and UX learning materials. Enrollees may also win a scholarship into the leading academy boot camp.
Blended Multi-Modal Learning Approach
Our approach combines dynamic digital media presentations with hands-on practical workbooks, creating an engaging and comprehensive learning experience. This method:
- Ensures interactive learning experiences.
- Modernizes their learning capabilities.
- Creates synergy between traditional and modernized learning methods.
In the end, the children and participants will take home their digital workbook and skills with the confidence to effectively navigate the digital world and seize the opportunities that await them.
